On August 6, 1945 at 8:15 a.m., the city of Hiroshima was razed to the ground by a single atomic bomb. By the end of the same year, the event had cost the lives of an estimated 140,000 people. But there were also signs of hope amidst all the destruction: Atomically damaged ginkgo trees that had been exposed to the horror of the atomic bombing produced new shoots and buds, giving people new courage to face life. A descendant of those ginkgo trees now adorns the castle park in Bad Kreuznach.
